Not every dairy shed has the perfect roof. Here's how thoughtful design turned this one into a high-performing solar system.

THE BRIEF

The challenge

Troy and Janelle weren't chasing the biggest solar system on the market. Like many dairy farmers, they wanted greater control over rising electricity costs and an investment that would continue delivering value for decades to come.

The challenge was that the dairy shed's main roof faced west — not the ideal orientation for a conventional solar installation. Simply filling the roof with panels would have been the easy option, but not necessarily the smartest one.

The real challenge wasn't fitting the most panels. It was designing a system that made the very best use of the roof available and ensured every kilowatt-hour generated worked harder for the farm.

THE DESIGN

Our solution

Every Sinclair project starts with understanding how the customer uses energy — not by selecting a standard package.

Working alongside Troy and Janelle, we designed a system around the way the dairy operates. By using tilt mounting systems, we were able to optimise the panel angle on the west-facing roof, improving energy production and making better use of the available roof space.

The 60-panel solar array was then paired with a Sigenergy hybrid battery system, allowing excess daytime generation to be stored and used through the evening, overnight and into the early morning milking.

Instead of exporting valuable solar energy back to the grid for a relatively low return, more of the farm's own energy stays on the farm — reducing electricity costs and extracting the greatest possible value from every kilowatt-hour generated.

SIZING LOGIC

Why this design?

The question wasn't "How many panels can we fit?" It was "How can we make every kilowatt-hour work harder for the farm?" That thinking shaped every part of the design.

Rather than simply filling the available roof space with solar panels, we carefully considered the orientation of the west-facing dairy shed roof, the farm's daily energy demand and how battery storage could maximise the value of every unit of electricity generated.

By using tilt mounting systems, we were able to optimise the panel angle and improve energy production across the day, extracting more performance from the available roof space.

The 60-panel solar array was then paired with a Sigenergy hybrid battery system, allowing excess solar generated during the day to be stored and used through the evening, overnight and into the early morning milking. Instead of exporting valuable energy back to the grid for a relatively low return, more of the farm's own energy stays on the farm, reducing electricity costs and increasing energy independence.

ON SITE

The installation

From the air, the completed system sits naturally on the dairy shed, with the yards, silos and surrounding paddocks telling the story of a working Taranaki farm.

Every detail of the installation was designed with long-term performance and serviceability in mind. The Sigenergy battery system is housed in a purpose-built enclosure (well done Troy!), with neatly routed cabling, weather protection and clear labelling to ensure the system is easy to operate and maintain for years to come.

Just as importantly, the installation blends into the day-to-day operation of the farm. Once commissioned, the system quietly gets to work — capturing solar energy through the day, storing excess generation and supplying the dairy when it's needed most.

Even in the middle of winter, when solar production is naturally at its lowest, the system has exceeded our expectations. During one recent week, it generated more than 170 kWh of solar energy while importing just 1.63 kWh from the grid — demonstrating how thoughtful design and battery storage can dramatically reduce reliance on purchased electricity, even during the toughest time of the year.
