Future-proofing a Stratford lifestyle property with solar and battery
Initial modelling pointed to ~75% bill reduction — real-world performance is proving closer to ~95% on this Stratford lifestyle block. 17.6 kW solar + 20 kWh battery, exceeding expectations.
When Christina and CJ approached Sinclair Solar, they weren’t only chasing a cheaper power bill. They wanted long-term energy security on their Croydon Road lifestyle property in Stratford — and a system that made the most of a newly built shed.
Like many rural blocks, their electricity spend had climbed over time, with annual bills approaching $9,000. They also wanted confidence the house would keep running through outages, which are more common off the main streets. The brief: strong financial returns, reliable backup, and room to grow.
The result is beating the brief. Our initial modelling showed about a 75% reduction in the power bill. In reality, the system is proving closer to ~95% bill cover over 12 months — exceeding expectation.
The design: 17.6 kW solar + 20 kWh battery
After reviewing usage and roof area, we designed a 17.6 kW three-phase solar system with 20 kWh of battery storage:
- 40 × Trina Vertex S+ 440 W panels
- Sungrow SH15T 15 kW three-phase hybrid inverter
- 20 kWh Sungrow SBH battery storage
- Three-phase install planned for future expansion
Panels went on the large north-facing shed roof — clean rows, strong year-round production, and an unobtrusive finish that suits the building rather than dominating it.
Why this size — not every panel that would fit
Rather than filling every square metre of roof, we matched the system to the property’s energy needs.
The battery bank stores excess daytime generation for evening use — so solar keeps working after the sun drops, instead of exporting cheaply to the grid. Paired with the shed array, that storage is what takes a strong solar install into near-full bill cover.
What the numbers look like
Performance on the Stratford lifestyle block:
- 17.6 kW solar capacity
- ~24,053 kWh clean generation per year
- Initial model: about 75% bill reduction
- Real-world: closer to ~95% of the power bill covered over 12 months — exceeding expectation
- First-year savings in the order of ~$8,550 (vs ~$9,000/year spend)
- 20 kWh usable storage for evenings and backup
That’s nearly a full year’s grid spend offset by the shed array and battery — not a modest trim. Beyond the bill, the battery adds resilience — keeping critical loads available when the rural network drops out.
Built for what comes next
The three-phase hybrid platform leaves headroom for EV charging, workshop loads, or more storage later. Designing for expansion means today’s investment still earns its keep as the property’s electrical life grows.
Local design, not a catalogue pack
Every Sinclair system is built around the property, the bills, and the plan for the next decade. From consultation through install and support, our Taranaki team delivers solar and storage meant to perform for decades — on lifestyle blocks as much as dairy sheds.
